February 13, 2018 - This Policy Brief was prepared by Carlo Bastasin, member of the SEP Scientific Council. In this brief, Professor Bastasin describes how the Euro area reforms are playing into the Italian elections, and vice versa. In short, by expecting that no party will clearly prevail, all political leaders feel free to sell the most unreal and reckless programs. As Professor Bastasin points out, this is shortsighted since whoever will govern after March 4th would best serve Italy by having ready a plausible trajectory for the reduction of the country's public debt in order to request credible support from the EU institutions in strengthening the structures of the Italian economy.
