July 17, 2017 - Il Sole 24 Ore published an editorial by SEP senior fellow Carlo Bastasin in which he discusses the role of Italy with the newly strengthened German-Franco axis. For 15 years there has never been a situation where the French and German political cycles were so aligned. Until last Friday, interlocutors close to Berlin's chancellery and even the German press showed an astonishing interest in Italy's involvement in reflections on the future economic governance of the euro area. An unexpected attitude aimed at widening the dialogue between Chancellor Merkel, which polls are winner of September's federal elections, and French neo-president Emmanuel Macron, the undisputed actor of French politics.
