March 13, 2017 – The informal meeting of the 27 EU heads of state or government took place this weekend, with most of the discussion centering around the main elements of the upcoming Rome Declaration. According to Donald Tusk’s statement following the event, the idea of a multi-speed Europe will likely dominate discussions ahead of the anniversary. Some countries are keen to loosen intra-EU ties and strengthen national sovereignty, while others are heading toward deeper integration, even if applied to a subset of all member states. Tusk argues, however, that political unity among the 24 will be key to the upcoming Brexit negotiations, and strengthening mutual trust among the 27 is a priority.
