C. Bastasin: Optimism Across the Rhine

image-05/16/2017 - 11:29Although French and German growth rates have been more or less similar, political sentiments in the two countries could not be more different. Three out of four French citizens deem the current economic conditions in their country negatively while only 8% of Germans share the same pessimism. The share of French citizens that believe that their country is a good place for business is half of the equivalent across the Rhine. As it relates to the future, only 36% of French are reported to be optimistic compared to 75% of Germans. Therefore, against this backdrop, enforcing a balanced public budget in France bears significantly higher political costs than in Germany.
