Editorial - Il Sole 24 Ore - G. Toniolo: Non chiamiamole "guerre valutarie"

image-09/01/2015 - 17:20August 30, 2015 – Il Sole 24 Ore published an editorial by SEP Scientific Council member Gianni Toniolo, in which he discusses the concept of “monetary wars” in the 19th and 20th centuries.  He argues that, at present, perceived monetary wars could actually be no more than bad policy coordination, and that peace can be achieved through a greater level of cooperation than exists now. In his opinion, the devaluation of the yuan, which has been perceived by many as an aggressive move, is probably a result of bad timing and poor communication, and has perhaps been given far more symbolic significance than is warranted.
