April 4, 2016 – Il Sole 24 Ore published an editorial by SEP Scientific Council member Stefano Manzocchi, in which he discusses fiscal policy as it relates to the manufacturing sector. While there has been much talk about growing the services sector and spurring innovation in information technology, Italy’s robust manufacturing sector, which generates a large portion of its employment, should not be forgotten. Pro-business policies are needed to both encourage current enterprises to grow and attract new investment from both national and international sources. Italy is known for its skilled workers, as well as entrepreneurs with the experience necessary to supply key components of the global value chain. The government needs to become an ally of small and medium enterprises, helping them to become more efficient and not punishing them for their size.
