Remembering Fabrizio Saccomanni

Remembering Fabrizio Saccomanni shortly after the shocking and extremely sad news of his death makes it impossible to discuss his intense, elaborate and distinguished activity as an economist and protagonist of Italian, European and international economic policy. I will limit myself, therefore, to recalling with gratitude and emotion a specific moment, one that for us is very important: in the period between the end of his mandate as Minister of Economy and Finance (February 2014) and his appointment as Chairman of Unicredit (2018), Fabrizio wanted to dedicate a part of his professional commitment to the Luiss School of European Political Economy. As a member of the school’s Scientific Council and Steering Committee, but especially as a great expert on European economic problems, he was an inspiration for our internal discourse and for the production of the Policy Briefs that have marked our presence in the European debate and in the analysis – often critical – of Italy’s position in the European Union and in the euro area.

I think that the best way to express our regret and affection towards Fabrizio is to open a section in our site to post the recollections that you would like to write about his scientific legacy and your relationships with him. With a more serene mind, I will try to participate in this collection by giving account of some of the numerous contributions that Fabrizio Saccomanni has left us and above all of his extraordinary humanity not only as a friend but also as a colleague.
