After the last meeting between Boris Johnson and Michel Barnier, the road to forming a harmonious relationship between the UK and the EU appears to be uphill: the UK is not interested in an ambitious free trade agreement with the EU if this entails the need to adapt to European rules and standards; the UK wants to regain its full sovereignty in terms of rules and standards; London is ready for a modest and sectoral agreement if the EU insists on regulatory convergence; and finally, London wants to play its game across the board, presenting itself on the international scene as a champion of free trade and establishing new commercial relations with other countries.
